On Ash Wednesday, March 5, worship services are scheduled for 7:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent with a special liturgy that invites the congregation into a season of reflective self-examination in preparation for Easter. At the 6:30 service, the parish choir will offer a beautiful setting of Miserere, mei Deus (Psalm 51) by Katherine Webb, Canon for Music at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. This is an exquisite new setting, reminiscent of the famous one by Gregorio Allegri. The choir will also sing music by Elizabeth Coxhead and Charles Wood.

Lenten Retreat: Claiming Hope in Difficult Times

On Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m. - noon, Bishop Susan Goff, retired Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Virginia, will lead a lenten retreat focused on Claiming Hope in Difficult Times.

Bishop Goff is a visual artist, writer, and bishop in The Episcopal Church. In 2012, she became the first woman elected bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. She led churches, schools, retirement communities and other organizations through the Covid pandemic while taking her own journey through the wilderness of breast cancer treatment. Bishop Goff delights in exploring the intersections between spirituality, nature, and the arts.

At our lenten retreat, Bishop Goff will invite us to explore psalms of lament and praise from the Bible and share contemporary psalms from her recent book, The Desert Shall Rejoice; Psalms from the Wilderness of Breast Cancer. Throughout the morning, she will invite us to reflect on our own wilderness journeys and support us in claiming hope in the midst of the challenges we face. There will be time for silent reflection, quiet conversation, and journaling. (If you keep a written or visual journal, please bring it with you.) All are welcome.

Choral Evensong for Candlemas
Feb

7:30 PM19:30

Choral Evensong for Candlemas

On Sunday, February 2, the 7:30 p.m. service will be a Choral Evensong for the Feast of Candlemas. This day commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem, referring to him as the light of the people of Israel.

The Parish Choir will sing service music by English composers Herbert Brewer, Humphrey Clucas and Hubert Parry. The anthem Truly the light is sweet, by American composer Carson Cooman, is a setting of verses from Ecclesiastes, written in celebration of the restoration of Appleton Chapel, The Memorial Church, Harvard University. Deke Polifka and guest organist Jonathan Schakel will play music by Jehan Alain and Théodore Dubois.

Evensong, considered the crown jewel of the Anglican choral tradition, is a form of Evening Prayer that draws from the medieval Latin offices of Vespers and Compline. This service is unique to churches of the Anglican Communion and has remained unchanged for centuries. All are invited to this very special and beautiful service of music and prayers.

Epiphany Celebration

Parishioners, friends, and neighbors of all ages are invited to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany at our Epiphany celebration on Sunday, January 5, at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to a brief, informal, family-friendly service in the style of our regular Wednesday evening prayers, you can expect royal visitors, King cake, and hot cider around the new fire of Epiphany, which will be kindled outdoors immediately after the service.

Epiphany recalls the revelation of Jesus’s divine glory to mysterious visitors from “the East,” those foreign travelers variously known as the wise men, the three kings, or the magi. In keeping with the tradition that their journey might have taken twelve days from the appearance of the star at Jesus’s birth, Epiphany is always the 6th of January, and marks the end of the Christmas season. In many churches, its observance is allowed to supplant the Second Sunday of Christmas (which can only fall on January 2, 3, 4, or 5 – too early!) or the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (which is always the first Sunday after the 6th – too late!). This year at St. Paul’s, we’re only cheating by a few hours, celebrating Epiphany in the evening on the 5th. At Sunday morning’s services we’ll keep the Second Sunday of Christmas so we don’t miss the Gospel story of the time that Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus spent as refugees in Egypt.

Did you know that Shrine Mont, the Diocese of Virginia’s mountain retreat center, is also the home of an important collection of artworks by John Douglas Woodward? Woodward was one of the country’s best-known illustrators in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the uncle of Shrine Mont’s founder. He is also the subject of parishioner Sue Rainey’s new book, Picturesque Palestine, Sinai and Egypt: Artworks and Letters by John Douglas Woodward, 1878-1879, documenting Woodward’s travels in the Holy Land. Parishioners, friends, and neighbors are invited to a presentation and celebration with Sue right after the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, June 16. Refreshments will be served, and Shrine Mont staff will be on hand with books for sale and information about Shrine Mont’s role as steward and conservator of Woodward’s work.
